WDHOF Reveals 2018 Class of Women Divers

USA based ‘Women Divers Hall of Fame‘ has today announced their class of 2018.

The six ladies – four American, two non-Americans – will be officially inducted into WDHOF on 24th March 2018 at the Beneath the Sea Awards Banquet in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The 2018 class includes a scientific diver, an underwater cinematographer, a marine conservationist, a diving educator and a diving journalist.

Diana Hollingshead: Instructor, Scientific Diver, Marine Biologist (USA)

Diana Hollingshead – a PADI IDC Staff Instructor, a DAN Instructor, an AAUS Scientific Diver, and co-owner of Eugene Divers Supply – promotes the need to stay current to maintain and further safe diving practices.

Hollingshead learned to dive in 1992. At the time of writing this article she has completed over 6,500 dives. She says her favourite place to dive is the beautiful, cold waters of the Pacific Northwest.

In 2000 she wrote the PADI Habitat Diver Specialty for the Oregon Coast Aquarium to train volunteer divers for the Aquarium. This outline is still used at the Aquarium today.

In 2008 Hollingshead established ‘Dive for a Cure’ to fund breast cancer research. To date Eugene Divers Supply has raised over US$560,000.00.

Hollingshead is a frequent school presenter and a volunteer at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where she educates the public and volunteer divers.

Nathalie Lasselin: Explorer, Filmmaker, Speaker (Canada)

Nathalie Lasselin is a multi-award-winning underwater cinematographer based in Quebec. As a technical diver and instructor, she has filmed and explored deep wrecks, caves, and bodies of water in more than 50 countries, including the Arctic.

Nathalie shares her concerns for our fresh water resources, and actively promotes a better understanding of our planet through her films, articles and lectures. Her drive is to bring people together and empower them to have a better relationship with their environment.

Her latest project – Urban Water Odyssey – embraces all her goals and philosophy.

Sharon Kwok Pong: Marine Conservationist, Wildlife Protection Activist, Environmental Advocate (China)

Sharon Kwok Pong was born in Hong Kong where her father was a founder of Ocean Park. She has had a passion for ocean and wildlife protection from an early age.

Kwok Pong is a successful actor and model. She has therefore used her celebrity status in the Chinese community to shine a spotlight on shark finning and illegal wildlife trade at events, in media campaigns, in schools and through her artwork. Her on-camera conservation efforts and fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese have been pivotal in inspiring the next generation of Chinese to protect the ocean.

Sharon Kwok Pong is a Mission Blue and WildAid board member, and is Executive Director of the AquaMeridian Conservation & Education Foundation.

Erin Quigley: Photographer, Educator, Speaker (USA)

Los Angeles based Erin Quigley believes that exceptional imaging inspires stewardship of the marine environment.

Quigley began shooting underwater in 1994. She has been teaching post-production techniques to the dive community since 2007. Today she is an award-winning photographer and one of the first Adobe ACE certified experts to focus specifically on post-production techniques for underwater photographers.

In 2010, Quigley left her career as an award-winning costume designer and television producer to create GoAskErin.com – this provides resources and training for underwater photographers.

When Erin Quigley is not speaking at conferences, she judges contests, leads trips, and teaches workshops worldwide. She also writes the ‘Imaging Techniques’ column for Scuba Diving magazine.

When she joined Divers Alert Network (DAN) in 2008, Patty Seery, MHS, brought with her more than 30 years of experience as a health care provider/educator and CPR instructor/instructor trainer in addition to being a scuba instructor/course director.

Today Seery is Director of Training at DAN America. She is the architect behind the current DAN first-aid courses which are being utilised by divers of all varieties and internationally by multiple agencies.

Her educational outreach has supported the leaders of tomorrow as they participate in various scuba-diving internships and scholarship programs. In addition she encourages and mentors women of all ages in diving activities through training and travel.

Patricia Wuest: Editor in Chief at Bonnier Corporation and Ocean Conservationist (USA)

Patricia Wuest, editor-in-chief of Bonnier Corporation, has enjoyed a 20+ year career in dive journalism, working on the likes of Scuba Diving Magazine, Sport Diver Magazine and their related websites.

Wuest originally certified as a diver in 1993. Today she is the first female editor-in-chief on both magazines.

As the leader of the Dive Group team at Bonnier Corporation, she is passionate about using the magazines’ platform to support the dive industry’s efforts on all fronts – training, equipment, travel, and conservation – to spread the joy of scuba diving, to promote safe-diving practices and to reinforce the industry’s commitment to protect our water resources.

New ‘Scuba Diver’ Magazine Is Launched

A brand new scuba diving magazine has been launched in the UK this month.

‘Scuba Diver’ is the brain child of Mark Evans and Ross Arnold.

Mark Evans is no stranger to the scuba publishing industry. He has edited Sport Diver (UK) for the past 18 years, growing the monthly publication from 76 pages to 148 pages. (Other dive magazines tend to be approximately 116 pages). During his tenure he published a monster issue of 220 pages.

“I wanted to mark a significant Sport Diver anniversary with a spring edition comprising of some long 16-page special supplements in it. It was fascinating producing such a big magazine”.

Mark Evans’ journalism career began when he was 18. He initially worked as a newspaper journalist on a number of daily and weekly newspapers, including the Yorkshire Evening Press, before joining PA Listings. This was a TV listings company – it supplied ready-made TV guides to national papers.

“At the start of 1999 I was working at the Goole Times when I spotted an advertisement in the Press Gazette for ‘an editor for a water-sports magazine’. It turned out to be a ten-year-old magazine called ‘Sport Diver’.

I started as Editor in March 1999, taking over from Gavin Parsons.

At the time I was the youngest editor of a dive magazine in the world – I was aged 25 – so my appointment caused quite a stir.

I quickly learned that there is a massive difference between writing for a newspaper and editing a magazine. But being a proud Yorkshire man I got stuck in.

My love of diving began when I was 12. My uncle was a commercial diver. He introduced me to this amazing sport off the coast of Anglesey in North Wales. A place that I still love diving today! As with many of us, I was immediately bitten by the bug. So landing this job was my dream come true. I was able to combine my hobby with my job at Sport Diver (UK).”

Over the next 18 years Mark Evans and his team built Sport Diver(UK) into a highly regarded major magazine, winning respect from the industry and a EUROTEK Media Award.

At the start of this year Bonnier – the American owners – took the business decision to close Sport Diver (UK) and just run with their USA version of Sport Diver. It meant that the British team (Mark Evans, Ross Arnold, Matt Griffiths, Will Harrison and Sam Wren) were made redundant. Subscribers were given two choices – receive Sport Diver (US), or have their subscription refunded.

However Bonnier liked Evans’ work. They wanted him to join their senior editorial team in Orlando, Florida. However, with the chances of getting a H1B professional-level visa less than 30% (the annual quote of 65,000 is vastly over-subscribed, to the tune of 350,000 plus people, meaning it goes to a lottery process), he felt it was too much of a risk with his family’s future at stake.

“I couldn’t risk my family’s future on such long odds – I didn’t want a lottery to decide where I went from here, so I thought that I ought to do what people had been telling me to do for the past 15 years or so. Set up my own media company and our first title is….Scuba Diver magazine! I’m working with the core team from Sport Diver UK – Ross Arnold (co-founder and advertising) and Matt Griffiths (art designer) – and the first issue will be landing in key dive centres in the next few days.

I am very proud of what I achieved at Sport Diver (UK).


I was there exactly 18 years. My first issue was March 1999. My last issue was March 2017. It was very disappointing when the title closed, but now the Scuba Diver team and I have a bright future to look forward to. The support from the industry has been nothing short of spectacular, and I will be eternally grateful for that.

So what can readers expect from Scuba Diver magazine? At the end of the day, diving is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable activity. So I try and keep this at the core of everything I have done, and intend to do.


It is especially important in this day and age, when we are competing with the likes of kite surfing and mountain biking, etc, which has a youthful and exciting appeal. Diving has got to move with the times to attract younger people. I can’t wait to get stuck in!”

Monty Receives Sport Diver Mag’s Outstanding Contribution Award

TV adventure personality and Brit scuba diver – Monty Halls – received Sport Diver’s 2016 ‘Outstanding Contribution’ at last month’s Sport Diver Awards.

Mark Evans, editor of Sport Diver Magazine, explained how the judging team had made their difficult decision, because there were a number of worthy names on the list.

“Monty is not doing epic diving expeditions. Instead he brings diving to the masses and into our homes. He has probably done more for diving in mainstream television programmes than any one else at present. The programmes may have been seen as a bit ‘cheesy’ by hardened divers, but they were watched and loved by the general public. This award was quite special for Monty Halls. It is the first time his work has been recognised and he got quite emotional when he received it.”

Robert Parrington from Wakatobi made the announcement at the award ceremony.

“This is an award recognising a person or company that has gone above and beyond in the name of diving.

For 2016, the judges chose a truly worthy winner, someone who has arguably done more than anyone to get scuba diving in front of a mainstream audience on our TV screens.

Over the past ten years, he has taken viewers around the world, from exotic destinations such as Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and the Great Barrier Reef, to closer-to-home but no-less-beautiful locations like Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall. In between these televised adventures, he has found time to pen several books, write numerous magazine articles and do the odd spot of motivational speaking.

Along the way he has been upstaged by his faithful dog Reuben (sadly now departed), met and married his lovely wife, and had two wonderful children.

This year, the Outstanding Contribution Award goes to Monty Halls.”

2014 was a fantastic year for The Underwater Marketing Company. Rosemary E Lunn (Roz) regularly contributes to a number of diving publications, including Sport Diver Magazine and X-Ray Magazine. Getting your work printed is always special. But nothing is quite so thrilling as being featured on the front cover.

The first half of the year was taken up consulting on and establishing an inaugural technical diving event in North America; TEKDiveUSA. Roz and the Thorntons were supported and assisted by some amazing and talented Smurfs, and the international team of speakers, sponsors and exhibitors weren’t bad either. A favourite memory was being grabbed by gleeful Tom Mount who was chuffed to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

From Miami Roz flew straight to Grand Cayman to work Divetech’s Inner Space. If every dive centre was as well run as Nancy Easterbook’s establishment, the diving industry would be in great shape. This week long event attracts rebreather divers from all over the world for a number of reasons, including the plethora of underwater attractions this tropical island offers. The highlight of Inner Space was being made an ambassador for Poseidon Rebreathers, a fun time machine with the ability to do some serious diving.

The summer saw the publication of the long awaited Rebreather Forum 3 Proceedings. (Click the link to get your free copy of this invaluable resource from this 2012 international safety symposium). Anyone involved with or diving rebreathers ought to read it.We attend a number of scuba shows and events throughout the World. In the USA Roz often bumps into Greg the Divemaster from Scuba Radio. This online radio show has been broadcast for 17 years. It is always good to be able to contribute to this programme.

In August, 200 divers descended on North Wales for The Anglesey ScubaFest. Diving, snorkelling, discover scuba, freediving clinics, kit try dives, bands, beach combing, beverages and bonne amid. £100 was raised for local charities and a good time was had by all.Time for another fab event. In September 500 divers, industry movers and shakers, explorers, experts and specialist exhibitors from all over the globe headed for the ICC in Birmingham. EUROTEK Advanced Diving Conference, the major European advanced and tech diving conference turned 4 this year! Our gorgeous gala awards dinner was even more glittering and we raised £4,000 for the Rubicon Foundation, thanks to the generosity of divers and sponsors alike.

It only seemed days later that it was DEMA Show in Las Vegas. Roz worked with Dive Rite on the launch of their new LX 20 Primary handheld torch. It was great to help produce a sexy display iin the New Products Showcase.So that is glimpse of some of the highlights of 2014 – a year of scuba event management, journalism and PR. Here is to a great 2015!

It is two days and counting until the UK diving event of the summer! This Friday (15th August) sees the start of the Anglesey ScubaFest.

The weekend event, now in its third year, showcases British diving, and to this end brings together like-minded divers from all agencies to enjoy some great diving, trial new equipment and techniques, tuck into some great food, listen to some live music, and just generally have a good craic over some apres-dive beers. Download the packed 2014 Anglesey Scubafest Schedule here.

For non-divers this ScubaFest is the ideal opportunity to learn all about scuba diving and meet key people from the leading diver training agencies; BSAC, PADI, SAA and SSI.

For certified divers, there is a packed schedule of diving with plenty of shore diving on offer. If you want to boat dive, there are still a handful of RHIB diving spaces left – go to the website to secure your spot.

You can also try something new. Curious about freediving? There are four Static and Dynamic Apnea Freediving clinics running morning (10am) and afternoon (2pm) on the event beach. All you need is a wetsuit and a pair of socks to take part. Everything else will be provided.

The same goes for sidemounting. Sidemount supremo Garry Dallas will be running Sidemount workshops and will be bringing rigged cylinders, harnesses and regs a-plenty

In between times you can refresh your rescue skills by getting up to speed with CPR!

There is plenty to keep the kids occupied with BSAC running Beachcomber and ‘Beach Snapper‘ events on both days. And children aged 12 and under get free entry into theAnglesey Sea Zoo during this ScubaFest. Just say the two magic words at the ticket office; “Anglesey ScubaFest”!

Representatives from manufacturers including Apeks Aqua Lung, Huish Outdoors, Liquid Sports, Mares, Suunto and Weezle Diving will be on the beach at Porth Dafarch near Trearddur Bay, or Newry Beach in Holyhead (final location dependent on the weather), and will have plenty of shiny new gear for you to take for trial dives.

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a snapper, then the Northern Underwater Photography Group (NUPG) has a special category for The Anglesey ScubaFest sponsored by AP Diving. This is free and anyone can enter. Simply take images of the ScubaFest event, i.e. divers getting ready, equipment, people having fun along the shore or at the event. You can enter a maximum of 2 images by 6.30pm on Saturday evening at the Outdoor Centre.
